Older Drivers: Stay Safe Now the Clocks Have Gone Back

With the clocks having gone back last weekend, evenings have started getting darker earlier – making driving conditions trickier, especially for older drivers. The UK’s leading road safety charity, IAM RoadSmart, has shared useful advice to help keep motorists safe and confident on the road this autumn and winter.

Give Yourself a “Driver MOT”

Just like your car needs regular checks, so do you:

  • Eyesight: You should be able to read a number plate from 20 metres. Eye tests are free for over-60s – get yours checked every two years.
  • Hearing: Make sure you can clearly hear sirens, horns, and other road sounds.
  • Reaction time: If your responses are slowing, try avoiding busy junctions or peak traffic hours.
  • Medication: Some prescriptions affect alertness – speak with your GP or pharmacist if unsure.

Reduce Headlight Glare

Night-time glare can be distracting. Keep your windscreen spotless (inside and out), check your glasses for anti-glare coatings, look slightly left of oncoming lights, and use your mirror’s night mode to reduce dazzle from cars behind.

Prepare Your Car for Winter

  • Check that all lights are clean and working properly.
  • Replace wiper blades if they smear or skip.
  • Top up screenwash with a winter mix to prevent freezing.
  • Check tyre tread and pressure for safe grip on wet or icy roads.

Plan for Shorter, Darker Days

Avoid rush hour when possible, use well-lit routes, and allow extra time for each trip. Driving in good light and at a comfortable pace helps reduce stress and improve safety.

Know Your Limits and Explore Alternatives

If you feel uneasy driving in the dark or bad weather, don’t feel pressured. Public transport, community lift schemes, or refresher driving lessons are all good options to stay confident and safe.

Top Tip: Stay “Winter Ready”

Keep an emergency kit in your car – including a torch, blanket, water, snacks, charger, hi-vis vest, and ice scraper. It’s a simple precaution that can make a big difference.

IAM RoadSmart’s Director of Policy, Nicholas Lyes, reminds drivers that November often brings an increase in collisions as conditions worsen: “Now is a good time to check your car is winter-ready, particularly focusing on tyres, wipers, screen wash and lights. Give extra space to the vehicle in front and allow more time for your journeys.”
