The Soul of a Car: Why We Grow Emotionally Attached to Machines

By Doodle from SA15 Car Sales

There’s a quiet moment right after someone buys a car from us – usually once the papers are signed and the keys change hands – where they don’t just look at it like a purchase. They look at it like a companion. A strange thing, when you think about it: a machine built of bolts, steel, sensors and circuits – yet somehow, it becomes part of the family.

Why Do We Name Them?

In Carmarthenshire alone, we’ve met:

  • Beryl the Berlingo from Pontyberem
  • Dave the Defender in Pembrey
  • Cariad – a bright red Fiat 500 from Llanelli

Psychologists call it anthropomorphism – giving human traits to non-human things. But this isn’t silliness. It’s emotional survival. A car carries our children to school. It holds conversations, arguments, even tears. It witnesses our lives in a way few other objects ever do.

Cars and Memory

Think of a road you’ve driven a hundred times. Maybe the A484 at dawn, or the winding road past Kidwelly Castle. You don’t just see tarmac – you remember music playing through the speakers, a first driving lesson, a first kiss.

Cars don’t store data, but they hold memory – because we do, while inside them.

More Than Transport

When a car is written off or scrapped, people say, “It’s only metal.” But it never feels like only metal. We grieve a little. Why? Because the car that took you to your first job, or saw your kids grow taller in the rear-view mirror, quietly became part of your story.

Machines… or Mirrors?

Maybe cars don’t have souls – but they do reflect ours.
A tidy, well-kept car often signals someone who values care and order.
A chaotic, crumb-filled one? A busy life, a family always on the move.
Either way – the car mirrors us back.

At SA15 Car Sales

We never forget that when we hand over a car, we’re not just selling horsepower. We’re handing someone their next chapter – school runs, late-night drives, big decisions, quiet moments. Keys to more than a car… keys to a life in motion.
